Purpose
The Catering Supervisor will oversee and develop a large team of student catering staff by providing leadership, mentorship, and training while ensuring seamless event execution for Forty Acres Catering within University Housing and Dining (UHD). This position is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and evaluating student workers, coordinating training programs, and managing day-of-event operations. This is a key role in fostering a positive student work environment, maintaining high-quality service standards, ensuring adherence to safety and hospitality protocols, and supporting administrative functions.
Responsibilities
Supervise 50+ student staff supporting Forty Acres Catering operations. In collaboration with UHD HR; lead recruitment, interviews, in unit onboarding and training of student staff. Cultivate a positive and collaborative work environment to motivate student staff. Help to develop effective working relationships among the student team, with others in Forty Acres Catering and beyond. Communicate performance expectations to student staff, including setting goals and establish timelines for success. Conduct regular performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and recognizing achievements. Address performance issues promptly to maintain high service standards.
Coordinate ongoing training for Catering student staff. Lead orientation sessions, workshops, and hands-on training to prepare students for various catering roles. In collaboration with Catering Operations subject matter experts and UHD Employee Development and Engagement team, develop training solutions including workshops, manuals, guides, and other resources to standardize procedures and ensure consistency. Collaborate with the Catering Operations team to align training with real-time event needs. Ensure the continued professional development of student employees. Provide ongoing mentorship and learning opportunities to promote their professional growth.
Support the planning and execution of high-profile events, ensuring student staff readiness and operational efficiency. Work events as needed to ensure set up and execution by student staff is consistent and to assist in the organization and direction of student catering staff.
In collaboration with banquet captains and other catering leadership, observe and assess student staff performance during events, ensuring alignment with service standards and event-specific expectations Gather feedback from Front of house (FOH) Catering Teams, clients, and guests to identify areas for improvement and update training programs accordingly.
Oversee student staffing logistics, including schedule management, availability tracking, and attendance monitoring. Address student performance as needed. Maintain accurate training and compliance records using the UT learning management system (UTLearn). Assist with budget oversight related to staff training and development initiatives. Serve as backup for other managers and Banquet captains. Drive a UT vehicle.
Required Qualifications
High school graduation or GED.
Two years of food service experience in a restaurant, commercial, or institutional facility.
One year of supervisor experience in food service or similar capacity.
Experience with operating standard kitchen equipment.
Ability to complete and maintain Food Safety Training required by University Housing and Dining.
Ability to complete and maintain Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) certificate.
Ability to complete and maintain University Housing and Dining cash handling training.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Three or more years of food service experience.
Experience in catering operations.
Experience supervising student staff.
Experience coordinating and training staff.
Experience working in a university setting.
Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor.
Excellent written and verbal communication.
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary Range
$48,500 + depending on qualifications
