The Dining Service Department at Saint John's University, Collegeville, MN, invites applications for a full-time (.92 FTE), benefit-eligible position of Retail Operations Manager. This position is responsible to directly manage Sexton Dining and the Grab & Go Kiosk at Saint John’s Preparatory School (SJP) and to supervise student managers of The Schu and Brother Willie’s Pub.


  • Provides leadership for food and beverage service in all retail operations, including Sexton Dining, The Schu, the Grab & Go Kiosk at SJP, and Brother Willie’s by overseeing operations and ensuring that financial expectations are met, through: 
    • Sound inventory management;
    • Menu planning and costing;
    • Management of human resources/labor cost;
    • Management of other controllable expenses.
  • Supervises Student Managers assigned to retail operations.
  • Provides staff supervision, hiring, development, and training, including support, student, provisional, and volunteer staff.
  • Ensures the safety of the university community, visitors, and guests by upholding and adhering to food and facility safety standards as prescribed by local, state, and federal health authorities. 
  • Administers and oversees all production and service policies and expectations.
    • Implements and follows effective purchasing and receiving policies.
    • Organizes and updates production standards to ensure menu items are prepared safely and consistently with expectations of high quality.
    • Establishes service guidelines that ensure resources are utilized efficiently. 
  • Assists in the promotion for use of Sexton Commons by marketing its services.
  • Assists with annual planning and goal setting for Retail Operations and the Dining Service and Events Department.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.



Education: Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management or related field of study or equivalent experience.      
Professional Experience: Two years of food preparation training or retail experience strongly preferred. 

Certification: Current Food Manager Certificationor ability to obtain it within six months of hire date.
Skills & Abilities:               

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, vendor online order systems, point-of-sale systems, timekeeping systems, and inventory management
  • Capable of physical activity including lifting, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, and standing for extended periods. 
  • Able to work with a variety of types of people and be a team player. 
  • Participatory management style. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a diverse team. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Available to work a variety of shifts; this may include some evening and weekend assignments as required by departmental schedules. 
  • Able to interact with the community of Saint John’s University as an integral part of the staff. Able and willing to acquire an understanding of the mission and character of Saint John’s.
  • Projects a positive, professional image. Maintains a high level of competence, good judgment, discretion, confidentiality, and sound decision-making skills.
