Organization Details

The primary purpose of this organizational unit is to provide campus wide food services to students, staff, and faculty on the North Carolina State University campus. NC State Dining operates (4) dining halls, (3) food courts, (3) fine dining restaurants, (11) cafes, (6) convenience stores, campus concessions, vending, and catering department. The department employs approximately 1200 temporary and student employees throughout the academic year, and approximately 150 SHRA & EHRA employees.


The Purchasing Specialist has the primary purpose to develop, implement, and operate the food and supplies requirements for Talley Student Union, using a computerized food production system (C-Bord).

The Purchasing Specialist coordinates all the purchasing of food and food supplies for the food venues located in Talley Student Union and Rave! Events.
It is an important member of the Talley Food Service Leadership Team and collaborates with all levels of dining employees and works closely with the department’s dietitian, management team, executive chefs, catering director, sous chefs, food service managers, directors, and supervisors.

This position is a crucial member of our C-Bord team, which is responsible for $11 million in food purchases and $3 million in food supply purchases annually. It assists the department C-Bord Administrator/Purchasing Manager in group purchases and with contracted vendors to maximize the buying power and rebate programs, which save the university and department significant dollars annually.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Bakery production and process orders for the bakery team.
  • Place catering orders and communicate with event coordinators on special products for high end events.
  • Stage orders based on event planning.
  • Supervision of stock room personnel.
  • Schedule stockroom personnel.
  • Receive truck orders, on and off cycle deliveries.
  • Inspect and approve deliveries. Check items for damaged products.
  • Approve daily/weekly invoice entry into C-Bord for payment.
  • Daily inventory counts.
  • Organize and maintain all storage areas.
  • Communicate out of stock items and advise service units on replacement products.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree; or Associate’s degree and two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Bachelor Degree preferred
Knowledge of state procurement policies preferred
Knowledge of departmental and university’s purchasing best business practices preferred
2-3 years of food service procurement experience required (experience in a university or college environment preferred).
Supervisory experience
ServeSafe certificate

Department Required Skills:

Expertise in inventory and ordering systems and food production systems. Must have knowledge of volume buying and the impact of a change of product, nutritional value of recipe, impact on plate cost, and customer acceptance.
Detailed knowledge of county and state health regulations, and food safety best practices.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and 60 lbs occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Exceptional computer knowledge and accurate data entry. Ability to create documents and spreadsheets to use as a reporting tool for specific information related to food and supplies procurement, storage, and distribution.
Ability to learn new software and provide instructions to other staff.
Computation skills to calculate costs of food and supplies to cost out to dining units and analyze available data.
Ability to change priorities in a fast paced environment.
Foster and maintain positive work relationships with a diverse population. Create and nurture a team environment.
