aashe 2010 logoNACUFS is pleased to present a panel discussion on sustainability at the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) 2010 conference, held Oct. 10-12 in Denver, Colo.

For this session, a panel consisting of NACUFS members and industry experts that participated in the development of the NACUFS Sustainability Guide will discuss their experience and role in its development and the processes used to gather information and data in a way that gives the reader the insights needed to successfully develop and implement a sustainability initiative.

The panel includes: Colleen Wright-Riva, director of dining services at the University of Maryland-College Park; Amy Beckstrom, director of dining services at the University of Colorado-Boulder; Micheal Meyering, project & sustainability manager for housing and food services at the University of Washington; Peg Rodger, principal at Envision Strategies; and Kathleen Seelye, managing partner at Ricca Newmark Design.

Join us at AASHE 2010 as we share more about how to use this guide to improve the sustainability performance of your department.

Zia Ahmed makes the move to Ohio State

Zia AhmedNACUFS would like to congratulate Zia Ahmed on his new position as the senior director of dining services at The Ohio State University (OSU).

"In our time with Zia, we found him to have a solid business background and contemporary ideas of management, very strong references that spoke to his being an energetic and genuine person who cared about his staff, and a strong belief in the importance of serving good food," said Fred Fotis, assistant vice president, student life at OSU.

Zia is an active association member, most recently serving as the Midwest regional president and on the NACUFS board of directors. He makes the move to OSU after more than 16 years at the University of Akron (UA).

"I have been very fortunate and thankful for all the opportunities at the University of Akron," says Zia. "I am also very excited to have a new opportunity at The Ohio State University. I certainly appreciate all the support from my dedicated team at UA and NACUFS friends and colleagues. I am looking forward working with the great team at OSU."

Best wishes on your new position, Zia!

NACUFS a co-sponsor for Women's Leadership Institute

NACUFS is pleased to be one of the co-sponsors of the Women's Leadership Institute on Dec. 5-8, 2010, in Amelia Island, Fla.

Women's Leadership Institute LogoThis special program is designed for women seeking to become senior leaders in higher education administration and student affairs. This year’s program will have a special focus on being courageous in the workplace and features four plenary sessions and a choice of three unique breakout sessions.

Co-produced by 19 higher education associations, this unique program will bring together administrators from across campus functions to help participants:

  • hone their leadership skills for working in a rapidly changing environment;
  • develop a better understanding of the campus as a workplace and culture;
  • share experiences with others about how campuses are adapting and adjusting to the new reality; and
  • create new personal networks and networking skills to better tap the higher education community.

Through presentations, small-group exercises, and discussions, participants will gain a practical understanding of what it takes to be a senior professional on a college or university campus—both the challenges and the rewards. Examine the unique roles, skills, and relationships needed to lead as higher education faces and deals with its most challenging period in 50 years.
