THE MOST INNOVATIVE NUTRITION PROGRAM CONTEST: 2009

Did you host a great nutrition program this year? Maybe it was innovative, broke all attendance records, or conveyed a profound message. Perhaps your marketing was right on target and your handouts were slick. We want you to share your most innovative nutrition program with us.

This contest has been expanded from its previous focus on National Nutrition Month® (a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Dietetic Association) to allow you to submit any program you have done this past year. Your program does not have to take place during March and does not have to incorporate the NNM theme. However, a themed event is required. This could be a one-day event or a single program or theme that took place over time. Below are the criteria to be used for evaluation. Share your program and help all of us in NACUFS make nutrition a winning strategy.

Entering is easy:
1)   Submit a themed program that you presented at your institution between September 4, 2008, and March 31, 2009. Entries for events outside this time period will be disqualified and will not be judged.

2)   All entries must include a completed and signed Official Entry Form and must be placed as page one. An entry which does not include a completed and signed Official Entry Form will be disqualified and will not be judged.

3)   Each separate foodservice unit at a member institution may enter a program. A separate entry form must accompany each entry (duplicate official entry forms as needed).

4)  First-place winners will be asked to email a PDF file of the recipe and optional pictures of the recipe to Gail Campana to post on the NACUFS Web site [gcampana@nacufs.org].

5)   Each entry requires a typed, cohesive essay of no more than one page and 500 words in length. The essay should summarize the program and include clearly stated goals and objectives, and must be placed as page two.

6)   All descriptive materials should be typed neatly and be professionally presented.

7)   No loose materials or audio/videocassettes will be accepted. Do not send glassware, shirts, aprons, or other items that are not an attached part of the entry itself or the entry’s cover. Photographs of such items may be included in your entry. Both color and black-and-white photos are acceptable. Digital photos are acceptable.

8)   For an entry which uses copyrighted materials and/or trademarks, the entrant institution must first have obtained written permission from each copyright and/or trademark owner for the purposes reflected in the entry and for further publication and use by NACUFS. Certification that these written permissions have been obtained is required on the Official Entry Form.

9)   The contest is open to all NACUFS institutional members in good standing. (The first-place winning school from last year is the judging school for these entries.) Entries must be designed and produced by the school entering the contest.

10) All entries must be carefully wrapped and mailed flat between cardboard to ensure delivery in good condition. All entries must be in scrapbook or notebook form and the exterior measurements may not exceed 18” X 28” nor weigh more than five pounds. Only one entry is permitted per notebook and the entire entry must be contained within a single book.

Please mail entries to:

Kansas State University
104 Pittman Building
Manhattan, KS 66506

11) All entries must be received by April 30, 2009. Entries not received by the deadline will have one point deducted per late day up to five days, after which time the entry will be disqualified and will not be judged.

12) Entries may be submitted for judging only once.

13) The judges will review all entries upon receipt for rule adherence.  Failure to follow the guidelines, including size and weight limitations, will result in mandatory point deductions.

Judging Criteria
14) All winners will be notified by letter following the completion of the judging. Grand Prize winners will be announced in the issue of Campus Dining Today following the national conference.

15) The decision of the judges is final.

16) All entries will be displayed at the NACUFS national conference in Milwaukee. Entries must remain on display until the close of the national conference or the time specified by the Nutrition Committee. They must be picked up by the representative of the school at the close of the exhibit.

17) By entering, permission is thereby given to The National Association of College & University Food Services to publish and/or use in any way the material submitted.

18) The prize for first place will be one free registration for the 2009 NACUFS national conference. The second- and third-place winners will receive a NACUFS travel bag.
