NATIONAL CONFERENCE SURPLUS FEEDS THE HUNGRY IN D.C
Sheila Pannell at George Fern Company received the following thanks from D.C. Central Kitchen. George Fern Company contracts with NACUFS for logistical transportation and support for its national conferences.
“From everyone here at D.C. Central Kitchen, I would like to thank George Fern Company for allowing us to recover food from the recent National Association of College & University Food Services show. We filled up three box trucks and two cargo vans with an estimated 13,000 pounds of food. Both our president and our kitchen director repeatedly remarked how excited they were to get such a large amount of high-quality—and healthy—food. We are using your donation as ingredients for the 4,500 meals we distribute each day to about 100 shelters and social-service agencies in the D.C. Metropolitan Area.
The Kitchen’s goal is to use food as a tool to empower individuals and communities. In addition to providing meals so that social-service agencies can spend more of their budget on their core mission, we run the nationally acclaimed Culinary Job Training courses to help men and women in transition secure employment in the food industry. Some of our graduates work for our full-serivce catering company, Fresh Start, while others work in kitchens throughout the city…”
