Sous Chef

University Dining at the University of Iowa is seeking a Pastry Sous Chef to assist in supervising the production, preparation, and presentation of pastry and baked items. The Pastry Sous Chef maintains quality and cost controls through efficient food preparation within University Housing & Dining bakery operations.  This position will also schedule, train, supervise, and coordinate the work of assigned staff involved in pastry preparation and service under direction of the Pastry Chef.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position, or an equivalent combination of education (such as completion of a certificate in the Culinary Arts) and related experience.
  • Experience (typically 6 months or more) in preparation and distribution of bakery products utilizing the latest techniques and knowledge of trends.
  • Experience (typically 6 months or more) in supervising and inventory control.
  • Working proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook.)
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including a demonstrated commitment to excellence through diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated proficiency to lead and coach individuals or groups in learning and improving effectiveness in processes and procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain ServSafe certification.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience (typically 1-3) in personnel supervision.
  • Experience working in a large-scale bakery operation.
  • Some experience working with a collective bargaining unit.
  • Working knowledge of electronic payroll and timekeeping systems.
  • Extensive experience in all areas of baking to include but not limited to: breads, cakes, pastries, and other bakery items.
